Kristie’s New Job: Personal Trainer!

imgp2428-cropped-1600.jpg

This week Kristie fulfilled her goal of becoming a personal trainer! I’m so proud of her, she’s perfect for the job. She’s passionate about fitness, passionate about health, and passionate about sharing it with others.

Every one else that works at this private gym is nationally certified, and even though Kristie doesn’t certify till next semester, they took one look at her (credentials?) and gave her the job. She already has four clients with more on the way.

This also means her good intentions will be projected on someone else besides me! (Just kidding)

Memorial Day Weekend In Idaho

img_6761-1600.jpg

Kristie and I decided to drive up to Idaho for the long weekend to hang out with family and spend some time away. Lacey had just finished competing (and kicking butt) at the State Track meet at BSU when we arrived. We really wanted to be there for it, but I couldn’t get out of work on Friday. Luckily mom and dad Tanner recorded the races so we still got to watch them that night.

Ever watched track events in slow-motion rewind? I’m telling you, it’s better than the real thing. Try it.

Sometimes I oversimplify and poke fun at track just to tease Kristie. She did track all through high school (where she still holds school records!) and loves it. While Kristie sees track as a complex discipline that requires skill, strategy and stamina, I’m thinking, “does this actually require a coach? just run faster than the guy next to you!” But, I readily admit to my ignorance–one could oversimplify any sport (i.e. Soccer, Step 1 of 1: Kick ball in net).

Anyways, Saturday morning Cole and I dug a bunch of dirt out of a window well to try to find where water was leaking into the basement. The process required one of us to be down in the hole filling up 5-gallon buckets with dirt while the other hauled them up with rope and carted them away to the garden. It was good manly work that probably went a long way towards improving our shirtless physiques. The rest of the day was spent doing yard work, jogging, hanging around and just enjoying our time to relax. That night we watched The Village, which I’d actually never seen before, and enjoyed it. It sparked an unusually long discussion about ethics that got the whole family involved.

On Sunday we went to church and ate a terrific home cooked dinner. It was so nice to be around family. Later on we had a bonfire the fire pit in the grove of trees out behind the house. It was so warm and cozy that we ended up dragging out 5 sleeping bags to sleep out under the stars.

On Monday, the Wagstaff’s invited us over for a Memorial Day BBQ/pool party, which was awesome, despite the sudden torrential downpour that arrived halfway through the event. Here’s a picture of Chase Wagstaff, me, Kristie, Lacey, mom and dad after getting out of the rain (I wish Cole were in it too, but he was the man behind the lens)

It was hard to leave (as always).

Live Music Week

On Tuesday night we saw a stellar lineup at Velour, including:

  1. David Hopkins – Our friend and longtime favorite from Dublin. He had an awesome set of new songs.
  2. Brinton Jones – Hands down the best talent in our local scene, his band’s MySpace. (Though I prefer his solo songs/sets)
  3. Jesse Baylin – Ho-hum.
  4. Teitur – An odd, quirky, amazing singer/songwriter from the Faroe Islands. Listen to Louis Louis on YouTube. I got hooked on a few tracks from his Poetry & Airplanes debut. He might take a few listens, but it’s worth it. Pictured below:

The next evening we headed up to SLC to see:

  1. Missy Higgins – Awesome performer, hails from Australia.
  2. Brett Dennen – Looks androgynous in person, but sings some terrific, chill tunes.
  3. Mason Jennings – I love this guy, it was my second time seeing him, Kristie’s first. He sings any number of tunes that could be considered “our song.” Pictured below:

Jeriann’s Baby Shower

img_6750-800.jpg

Kristie threw a baby shower for our friend and awesome mom-to-be, Jeriann Leavitt. I’ve been assigned to post about it, even though I wasn’t allowed to be there.

One thing I’ve gathered when preparing to write this post is that when describing a baby shower, the phrase “super cute” must precede every detail. That being said, I can confidently present these facts:

  1. The mom-to-be was “super cute”
  2. Jeriann got some super cute gifts from loving friends and family
  3. Ruthie will undoubtedly look super cute in all the super cute clothes she received

Kristie planned this hilarious (uncharacteristically not cute) baby shower game that involved six different melted candy bars and six disposable diapers.

Here’s a picture…can you guess which diaper contains which candy goodness?

The shower’s attendees could look, taste, touch, smell…whatever it took.

I grossed everyone out when the shower ended by diving right into diaper #4 to correctly ascertain that it contained KitKat, despite whatever else it looked like.

Family Dinner at the Coleman’s

The Coleman’s hosted a terrific family dinner up in Ogden today. We got to catch up with a bunch of cousins and aunts and uncles and eat some amazing BBQ’d steak. Here’s a picture of us with Steve and Jordan (and Sher and Lance’s little Rowan):

Factory Outlets and Arena Football

Saturday we hit up the Park City Outlet Malls and got our shop on. I didn’t end up getting anything, but Kristie picked up a couple cool items. I found myself gravitating towards Banana Republic to augment my business-casual wardrobe. Behold, the ravages of corporate America.

We got a call from Justin and Jeriann around noon, letting us know that our buddy Kyle set aside some tickets for us to the Utah Blaze arena football game that evening if we wanted them. We couldn’t pass it up, so we jumped in the car and headed up to SLC. The Blaze game was great…fast-paced and high scoring. Here are a couple of pics:

A big shout out to Chief for a rad evening!

After the game we went to Applebee’s with Justin and Jeriann and had a great time. You should have seen the nacho plate I downed unassisted. It boggled even my mind.

Tom’s Birthday!

My birthday was on Friday, May 9th–and it was awesome from start to finish.

It began with an killer homestyle breakfast in bed (muchas gracias to my lovely wife) and a couple of really thoughtful gifts presented on my way to work. Then, when I got to the office, I found my desk totally decked out with decorations and food–a special thanks to fabulous friends at work, Charlene and Katie. I even got a “birthday boy” ribbon that I wore almost the entire day.

After work, I picked up Kristie and we headed up to Park City for the weekend. For dinner we hit up Bangkok Thai on Main, the same restaurant we went to the night we got engaged. The food, as always, was amazing. I ordered a curry hot enough to kill us both, but loved it nonetheless.

To top it off, we stayed at a nice hotel with an outdoor hot tub to die for. Oh and Kristie got me the coolest present, the hands-down best pull-up bar known to man. I’ve wanted it ever since my good buddy Michael Davis reclaimed the one he let us borrow for months.

It’s too bad birthdays only come annually. Thanks to all the friends and family that sent their love and best wishes. Love you guys too!

Haworth Girls Reunion

Kristie’s Grandpa runs the oldest family farm in the state of Idaho. And he had seven daughters. Seven. Now don’t get me wrong, Grandma and Grandpa wouldn’t have it any other way, but that just seems like a long-lost verse from Alanis Morissette’s Ironic.

Anyways, when the girls (Kristie’s mom and aunts) all got together for a reunion, Kristie and I decided to take a trip up to (great) grandma Hiller’s to join in the festivities. Hanging out was a blast, all the sisters are so cool and all so much fun.

In other exciting news, we got to meet President Monson (!) when he just happened to be presiding over Grandma Hiller’s Stake Conference on Sunday. Grandma introduced us one by one as we got to shake his hand. He is truly an amazing man.

Here are a couple of pictures of the weekend, a shot with Grandma and Grandpa and then one of Kristie and mom.

Reading Rainbow

It’s been a while, but I finally got back into the habit of reading good books in my leisure time. Bless those public libraries. Kristie isn’t getting jealous cause she finally picked up the last Harry Potter book and has been pretty wrapped up herself. Over the last couple weeks I read John Steinbeck’s classic East of Eden and loved it. This week I’ve jumped into Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s 100 Years of Solitude. Marquez’s book was originally written in Spanish, which makes me feel like I’m missing out a little, but it’s been great so far.

But don’t take my word for it. (queue Reading Rainbow theme song)

Anyone else reading something good?
