New Years Eve In SLC

Can anybody tell me: Why in the world do they refer to New Years celebrations as “First Night” celebrations? It’s not the first night. It’s the last night. First morning maybe…but not first night. I can’t believe this gross error is allowed to perpetuate like it does. Please correct me if I’m missing something.

Anyyyyways…HAPPY NEW YEAR! On New Years Eve we headed up to Grandma Hiller’s because she was sweet enough to put us up (put up with us?) so that we could stay out late in SLC and have somewhere to crash. There we connected with Nathan and Kendra who came with us to dinner and then downtown for the shindig the city put together.

After walking around Temple Square, the Gateway, etc for a while, we were lucky enough to stumble upon a badge that got us into the restricted-access area at the Gallivan Center where they had a bunch of live performances and dancing. We caught a pretty cool reggae show that played until the clock struck midnight and the fireworks were set off.

Christmas 2008

[Fun Fact: McConnons.com was launched in December of 2007 as a Christmas present from me to Kristie. Here's the sentimental, ambitious post I wrote on Christmas Eve 2007 to really kick things off.]

This year we got to spend Christmas with the Tanners up in Boise. We had from Tuesday night to Sunday, which was awesome…but really made me miss those long college winter vacations. Here’s a few fun photos to illustrate the week:

The kids before the Christmas Eve dinner tradition of Crab, Shrimp & Chicken.

Stocking gifts from Santa!

Can you tell Kristie's excited for me to open my gifts?

I thought the hood on this jacket made Kristie look hilarious.

Cole won the Monopoly game, despite our best efforts to gang up on him.

"Chancho. When you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. It's for fun."

This is a video of Cole as the Jacket Monster. It’s really weird looking, but oh-so funny:

Other highlights:

  • Working out and playing racquetball at the YMCA with the new family pass the Tanners got for Christmas
  • Sledding in the crazy snowstorm
  • Stunting with Chris and Lacey
  • Home-made soup with Kenny and Mari
  • Delivering mom’s delicious sugar cookies to neighbors
  • Boardgames! Especially Clue
  • Dad’s slideshow

Mom and dad Tanner: Thanks so much for having us and making Christmas wonderful!

Mom and dad McConnon: We really missed you and can’t wait to be with you for Christmas 2009!

Cheer Christmas Party ’08

Tonight Kristie and I went to the annual Christmas party at Nicole’s house. There was an ugly sweater theme, and although I didn’t win, I managed to impress many people with my girly, belly-shirt sweater of choice. Here’s a few shots from the night:

The night got particularly exciting when halfway through dinner a bunch of yellow jackets started appearing out of nowhere freaking everyone out. We soon discovered that one of the tables we borrowed from Nicole’s neighbor (that had been in the cold garage) was home to a yellow jacket nest. Apparently they started waking up from their cold weather hibernation once they arrived in the warm house. Good thing they were pretty sluggish…it could have turned into quite a fiasco.

Vizad Christmas Party

Tonight the work gang got together with our family and friends for a dinner Christmas party…great eats, great company. I can’t believe it’s my second Christmas with Vizad…time flies. I’m really grateful to have such a good job, especially in these rough economic times. Working with LotusJump has been an invaluable experience…I’m loving it.

Vail Ski Trip

Nathan and Kendra invited us up to a friend’s time share condo in Vail, Colorado this weekend. It was a-w-e-s-o-m-e. Not only did they hook us up with free lodging, but they got us lift tickets too!

So we took off on Friday after work and piled into their Santa Fe, for the long 6 hour drive to Vail. The trip went by pretty quickly due to the lively discussion that’s characteristic of our group. Never a dull moment when you get the four of us talking.

The condo was perfect…within walking distance of the resort, outfitted with a fireplace, really cozy. We stayed up kinda late Friday watching movies, but I was so antsy to ski I couldn’t even sleep in. We got up, got things squared away, then headed to the lifts. Kristie had only skied a couple times before, and not for many years, so we did a few practice runs while she got back on her feet. I was amazed by how fast she picked it up, and how much she improved in one short day. We all had a blast on the mountain, the snow was terrific. I even got to slip away to the back bowls for a few runs towards the end of the day…pure bliss. Skiing is hands down my favorite pasttime. Now that I know Kristie enjoys it too, I’ll have to start earning the big bucks so that someday we can afford those obscenely expensive family ski trips.

Saturday night we went out to dinner in the village and went window shopping at the ritzy shops. Kristie found a bear:

We went swimming in the outdoor heated pool before retiring to bed. I felt so spoiled. We went to church on Sunday and got to go on a walk before heading back home. The scenery there was beautiful, I loved the snow.

…and so did Nathan (he got his revenge shortly after this whitewash):

Falling Gas Prices

I’ve been so excited about the falling gas prices that I’ve documented my last few visits to the pump. Each time I go, I find myself thinking “this could conceivably be the cheapest gas I’ll ever buy in my lifetime.” I’ve been wrong now quite a few times and couldn’t be happier about it. How far will it drop?
