BYU vs. Oklahoma

On Saturday BYU upset the #3 team in the nation at the brand-new Cowboys stadium in Dallas. I was beside myself. We watched the game at Leah and Jonny’s with some friends…my only regret is that we didn’t make it out to join the 2k fans that met the team at the airport when they arrived home at 2am. I think this picture conveys some of the post-game celebratory excitement we were feeling:

While downtown Provo was close to peaceful rioting, we spent the evening swimming in Leah and Jonny’s pool. Not a bad way to cap off the night…thanks guys!

VEGAS for Harry and Sarah

This weekend we had an action packed trip to Vegas to celebrate Harry and Sarah’s wedding reception. We took two cars on the way down, between Richie, Theron, Kedra, Jeremy, Kristie and me. Jeremy and his family were cool enough to let us crash at their place for the weekend.

When we arrived in Vegas we went straight dinner as planned (where we got to meet up with Tyler and Katie). Then we took off and headed to the Sahara to go to a show. At the last minute Mac and Julie decided to come, which allowed us all to celebrate a bit of his birthday together. Jeremy was able to score the tickets for free, so we were treated to “The Magic & Tigers of Rick Thomas.”

It was awesome, and brought to mind flashbacks of Gob in Arrested Development. (If only he could have used “The Final Countdown” as his theme song too)

After the show ended we got word that Dan’s band, the Imagine Dragons, were headlining a show at Vegas’ “First Friday” outdoor festival. We had just enough time to make it, so we jumped in the cars and headed over.

The show was best I’ve seen them perform so far–they’ve been in Vegas doing it full-time this summer, so their sound is on point. There was tons of energy, and it was pretty awesome to dance to the music in the shadow of the Stratosphere.

The next morning we got up and lounged around the pool, played some water basketball and put together a killer BBQ. Relaxation station.

Around 6 o’clock we rolled out to the Reynolds residence for the outdoor reception. Everything was decorated beautifully, and the food and live jazz trio fit perfectly.

Harry and Sarah are one of those couples that you can tell are perfect for each other within 5 minutes of getting to know them. Tonight they seemed as fun, beautiful and vivacious as they’ve ever been.  It was such a blast to celebrate with them, their families and friends.

After the reception we headed over to the Little Chapel of Flowers, the wedding chapel owned by Jeremy’s dad. We took a moment to snap a photo of our mock-renewal-of-vows. If we ever do that for real, I think Vegas might just be the place…

One of the perks of owning a wedding chapel in Vegas is that you get access to limos whenever the need arises. So Jeremy graciously loaded us up and took us over to the strip to check out a few attractions we had on our list.

Richie always has to look like a rock star and show us up. I’m sick of it.

All in all it was an awesome trip. Thankfully there are a handful of unwed Reynolds’ left…so with any luck we’ll get to do it again.

RSL on Pioneer Day

Tonight we got a group together to watch a Real Salt Lake soccer game. Muchos gracias to Jer for making that happen. I asked a lady in front of us to get a group shot, and somehow she managed to produce this:

Kristie and I are only half in it.

The game was awesome…RSL had a great comeback win and they had a killer fireworks show afterwards.

4th of July Weekend

Kristie’s family got to come down from Boise to spend a great 4th of July weekend with us. Despite threats of rain, we were able to spend the majority of it out in the sun (which made for a very happy tommy). On Friday morning we packed food, frisbees and longboards for a picnic at Rock Canyon Park. Here are a few pictures from lunch and riding down the canyon:

That night we went out for Thai, then got sucked into a Twilight Zone marathon on TV.

Saturday morning we went to Provo’s annual 4th of July parade, where we got to catch up with Jeriann, and her adorable daughter Ruthie.

Later that afternoon we grabbed lunch and then set up a blanket on the lower MTC lawn, which gave us a pretty awesome view of the fireworks over the Stadium of Fire.

[before you compliment me on my photography skills, I must disclose that I didn't take the above picture]

The traffic was so congested after the show, that we ended up falling asleep in the blankets while waiting for things to clear up. Cole and I made it back pretty quickly however, riding seated on longboards (bobsled style) down the 2 mile winding roads to our apartment.

Dinner and RSL

Tonight we went out with Ryan and Mandy for dinner at Chipotle’s…then caught an awesome Real Salt Lake game compliments of Mandy’s dad’s work. RSL trashed Toronto 3-0 with a few really pretty goals. The weather was perfect–and I mean perfect–for a night out like that.

We even got to get a picture with Leo the Lion…Real’s studly mascot. Big thanks to Ryan and Mandy for the invite, you guys are awesome.

Canyon View Hiking

So lately I’ve taken up trail running because I find it infinitely more enjoyable than pounding the pavement. It feels like hiking, just twice as fast. So while the hills are killer, the views and the escape make it one of my new favorite pasttimes (thanks to Nathan for re-igniting this fire).

Anyways, I recently discovered a loop above Canyon View Park that I absolutely love. So this morning, Kristie suggested that we go hike it and do a little additional exploring. We ended up spending all morning (and a good portion of the afternoon) discovering what the canyon had to offer.

On our way home, we invited Leah and Jonny to return with us later that night for a double date. We packed up Cafe Rio, a laptop, a movie and blankets galore just in time to catch the sunset. It turned out to be quite a fun little adventure (which was cut a bit short by passing showers)…but really memorable nonetheless. Here’s a couple shots of us up on top. They got the better lighting, but we got the valley in the background:

Boston/Marathon Trip

Back in October, Kristie and I ran the St. George marathon…she killed it, and it almost killed me. But, with her awesome time, she qualified to to run the Boston Marathon; the world’s oldest annual (and perhaps most prestigious) 26.2 mile course. What made this even cooler is that Boston is conveniently located 40 minutes southeast of my our place in Acton, MA…so we got to visit and spend time with my family leading up to the race.

We arrived Thursday afternoon and got a chance to go out to eat with my brother Coleman and my parents. Andrew had to be in NC competing at an equestrian event and couldn’t make it…we missed him like crazy. Friday we got a chance to swing by Walden pond and soak up some history and sun. In the afternoon we dropped Coleman and his buddy Matt off at South Station in Boston so they could embark on their spring break trip to Miami Beach, FL.  Besides a close call with the car overheating, everything was cool and they made it out ok. My aunt DD came by and surprised us with an Edible Arrangements gift for Kristie (fruit, a thoughtful and safe pre-marathon food). It tasted as great as it looked:

On Saturday, mom came with us to the pre-race expo in downtown Boston. There Kristie received her bib, timing chip and free shwag. While we were there, we picked up an official Boston Marathon jacket that Mom and Dad gave Kristie as a graduation present. She loves it…it looks awesome on her:

After church on Sunday, DD took us out in her new Yaris to check out the beginning of the course in Hopkinton to make sure that we’d be able to get Kristie to the starting line on time and beat the crazy traffic. Then, at 6:30 am on Monday we got up and got everything together for the race. We had the pleasure of travelling with Littleton’s bishop, Frank Gentile, who was running his second Boston Marathon–this time for charity. Here’s a shot of Kristie leaving the house:

At about 8:30 I dropped the pair off in Hopkinton so they could get to the starting line around 10:00 am. Then I drove back to Acton and we all departed for the finish line to wait for Kristie and the other runners to come by.

We got off around Kenmore square and walked a couple miles away from the finish line till the crowd thinned out a bit. From there we had a great view of the course and the runners that came pouring by in droves.

The air in Boston on Patriots day (a holiday for MA!) is electric. College kids, locals, and out-of-state visitors can’t help but get caught up in the exiting atmosphere surrounding the day’s big events. For a comical perspecitve on the race, check out Bill Simmons’ Idiots Guide to the Boston article (thanks for sending that over Ang!)

At around mile 24 of the course we watched the leading men, women and wheelchair athletes come roaring by. Kara Goucher was leading the pack for the women at that point and we all had high hopes that she’d take it (she didn’t, but still had a great showing at third). When Kristie came by we went nuts, ringing our cowbells, yelling and waving our signs. I think we actually startled her a little.

As soon as she passed us, we fought huge throngs of people to meet up with her at the finish line. She said the hills (Heartbreak and its nasty cousins), the crowded course, and strong headwinds were real challenges…but she did awesome, coming in at another Boston-qualifying time of 3:34. I’m amazed that she did so well after having lost so much training time to her nagging foot injury. It was so cool to be there to cheer her on…the race is so huge, and contains so many of the world’s best distance runners. If the qualifying time were a little more forgiving for my division, perhaps even I would consider it. It would be something incredible just to be a part of.

So congrats babe, you’re an inspiration to us all. Thanks to everyone that supported Kristie with calls, texts, emails and more…it meant the world to her!

BYU Baseball Season Opener

BYU is playing it’s season opener vs. Utah with a themed “throwback” night right now – 25 cent tickets, live organ music, etc. It was so full that there was standing room only when we arrived, so the six of us left the park, went around to the outfield, cut through the fence and watched from the grass between the trees. Here’s a picture from where we’re sitting:

Superbowl Party

Ryan and Mandy had us over to watch the Superbowl at their place. The food, company and game were all awesome. I think I was the only Steelers fan in the house (thanks to Mema growing up in Pittsburgh).

Mobile Update: Steelers win Superbowl XLIII

Steelers just won an incredible game…Holmes’ last TD catch was spectacular.
