Graduation Party

My aunt Carolee and Cory invited us over for Sunday dinner to celebrate their son Jason’s graduation and mission call. It has been quite a while since we have been able to get together, so it was really fun! They moved into their home just a few years back and it is beautiful. The location is amazing, and we spend a lot of our time out on the deck enjoying the warm weather and great view. Lilah warmed up to Jason right away and kept trying to get him to hold her. Jason was so sweet with her.

The food was great, and we really enjoyed talking with everyone for a couple hours. Thanks for the invite! We had a great time!

The Garden

This might be my favorite time of the year, and with it comes another favorite; gardening! I am no pro, but the nice thing is that it doesn’t have to be difficult. You don’t have to know a lot to get some free, and delicious food.  It was cold and snowy for longer than usual and just when it started to warm up, then came the rain. I have never seen so much rain here in Provo! We’ve had everything ready for a while, so when there was a nice and sunny Saturday we jumped at the chance.

This year we planted: spinach, swiss chard, collard greens, beets, carrots, onions, zucchini, yellow squash, acorn squash, butternut squash, lots of tomatoes, and green beans. I’m getting hungry listing everything… We actually had quite a bit of spinach come back from last year, and I’ve already been able to harvest some. I just hope it doesn’t all die after being transplanted. I am very excited not to have to buy so many greens for our smoothies. Happy gardening.

Cinco De Mayo Party

My friend Nikki loves to throw parties & decided to have one for Cinco De Mayo this year. We were very excited to be invited. There was tons of food & lots of friends to hang out with. Lilah had a blast playing with all the little kids that were running everywhere. She is getting better at walking on the grass, and I think she enjoyed being able to join in on some of the fun.

Lilah loved playing with this dog. He was very mellow and friendly.

They had a pinata for the kids and surprisingly, no one got hit with a bat…lol. My favorite part was the mustache contest. Everyone had to draw them on their spouse & kids. Some people went all out, it was hilarious.

Thanks again Nikki for all your hard work & preparation! We all had a great time.

Nana Rita Comes to Visit

About a month ago, Nana Rita got to come and visit! She got to stay for 10 days, which actually seemed like no time at all! We were busy playing the whole time so we were all surprised and sad when it came time to say goodbye.

We spent a lot of time with friends. We spent an afternoon with Jackie & her kids; had dinner with Carolyn Hamilton & her family; spent a weekend in Idaho with my extended family, where Rita just fit right in; went to lunch with Sucher & his wife; and stopped in to say hi to Mary England. We enjoyed spending time with all of you and wish we could have done more.

We did something this trip that we have never done before. We went on a girls shopping trip! Yes it was short, but we were able to find some really cute things for mom! We decided that we are going to make that a tradition from now on!

We spent a lot of time on this trip enjoying delicious, food! We both enjoy the same kinds of food, so that makes things really fun. We had out daily green smoothie, kefir, roasted vegetables, carrot ginger soup, quinoa sweet potato salad, chocolate chia pudding, whole grain waffles, whole grain mango breakfast & more. I think we ate the whole grain mango breakfast 3-4 of the days she was here! We both love it! Mom has been a real inspiration to me with her healthy eating. We love to share recipes & talk about food for hours!

The remainder of the trip was pretty much just spent enjoying Lilah. Nana is a wonderful grandma & Lilah is lucky to have her! We miss her a lot & can’t wait until she can come out and visit again!

Lilah’s 9 Month Appointment

Lilah had her 9 month check up today, and I was very happy with how it went. I had decided early on that I was not going to give Lilah any type of fortified food. I wanted her to get her vitamins, minerals, and all nutrients purely from food if possible. The way I saw it, I had 2 options: 1. Give her food that had all nutrients & fiber stripped then added back in, in a different form, or 2. Give her food that still had it’s original contents. I chose the latter.

One concern that my doctor had was her iron levels. He told me that since I was nursing that her supplies would steadily deplete after she was born. He said that I really needed to give her some iron-fortified rice cereal to counter that. Well I did a lot of research myself & decided against the rice cereal. I looked into what foods were the highest in iron and how it is best absorbed. My own iron levels are also high which she could continue to get from me through nursing. I am happy to say that today Lilah’s iron levels tested at a very normal level! She is growing, very active, and everything looks healthy.

Some of the foods, which are high in iron, that I make sure to include in her diet very often if not every day are: chia seeds, quinoa, spinach, broccoli, eggs, lima beans, peas, sweet peppers, brown rice, tomato, green beans, kidney beans, beets, cauliflower, etc. She eats and enjoys all those foods. She especially enjoys her green smoothies every morning which are loaded with iron & include a citrus fruit to increase absorption. I am grateful that I don’t have a picky eater on my hands, and I am grateful for amazing, delicious, nutrient dense, real foods.

Thanksgiving 2010

This year we had Thanksgiving at the Tanners again to get back on track with the rest of the family. We had a blast hanging out with everyone–enjoying food, boys/girls nights out, being grateful, getting the flu, playing games, etc., etc. All the stuff that makes holidays great. Houston and Becca surprised us all by coming up after their honeymoon to hang out. We’re very grateful to mom and dad Tanner for their hospitality and unfailing kindness. As for the rest, I’ll let some pictures do the talking:

Halloween Dinner

Kristie's soup, cooked in the pumpkin...shout-out to Jody Farnsworth for the awesome recipe

We had originally planned on throwing a Halloween party with the old gang–but when schedules and illness forced a few key individuals to drop out, we decided to make it easy and host a fun little dinner instead. The food and company were terrific, as always. Jer and Ked represented by dressing up in costume, big ups to them.

Here’s a shot of Naomi, Lilah and Rebecca:

Grandma Hiller’s @ Asian Star

Just like last year, and the year before that, great-grandma Hiller invited us to celebrate her (and Caleb’s) birthday at the Asian Star restaurant in Midvale.

As always the food and company were terrific. We pack two long tables with family, and consume enough Walnut Shrimp, Sesame Chicken and Mandarin Beef Sirloin to feed a small army. Grandma shared some neat stories with the group. When one of them was interrupted by a hearty chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ from a table nearby, we all joined in, carried it away, and dedicated it to Grandma and Caleb.

Really fun tradition…grandma is as feisty, fun and darling as ever. It was great to have Lilah with us for the first time as well.

Monster Zucchini

Tonight we had some friends over to watch BYU’s depressing loss to Utah State. At about halftime I wandered outside with Ruthie and Justin to check out the garden, and in doing so, discovered an enormous zucchini sitting under some leaves.

To illustrate just how big it was, I set it up next to Lilah. I think it freaked her out a little.

BobKat Birthday Bash

A bunch of us got together to celebrate Bobby and Kathryn’s birthday’s at Texas Roadhouse tonight. It was good to see everyone, and great to witness B&K riding a saddle to earn their b-day dessert. Love you guys.
