We moved!

Around New Years, Kristie and I began thinking about how awesome it would be if we could find an apartment complex to manage in exchange for rent. After a few phone calls I had a couple leads, but the real breakthrough came when I got in touch with my good buddy Ryan, who works for (and lives at) Alpine Village. He informed me that a spot on the management team was opening up, so we hurried and got our resume’s in order to set up an interview.

To make a long story short, we got the job. Kristie works 15hrs/week in the office (when she’s not in class or coaching) and I do an hour of grounds/maintenance work each day before heading off my real job. We’re a bit busier now, but we love the place we’re living in. Since we were getting by okay when we had to pay rent, we now just transfer an extra $550 to savings each month. So yeah, we work more, but we’re saving more and our new pad is waaay nicer than our place at College Park.

Here’s a quick video tour if you’d like to check it out:

Christmas 2008

[Fun Fact: McConnons.com was launched in December of 2007 as a Christmas present from me to Kristie. Here's the sentimental, ambitious post I wrote on Christmas Eve 2007 to really kick things off.]

This year we got to spend Christmas with the Tanners up in Boise. We had from Tuesday night to Sunday, which was awesome…but really made me miss those long college winter vacations. Here’s a few fun photos to illustrate the week:

The kids before the Christmas Eve dinner tradition of Crab, Shrimp & Chicken.

Stocking gifts from Santa!

Can you tell Kristie's excited for me to open my gifts?

I thought the hood on this jacket made Kristie look hilarious.

Cole won the Monopoly game, despite our best efforts to gang up on him.

"Chancho. When you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. It's for fun."

This is a video of Cole as the Jacket Monster. It’s really weird looking, but oh-so funny:

Other highlights:

  • Working out and playing racquetball at the YMCA with the new family pass the Tanners got for Christmas
  • Sledding in the crazy snowstorm
  • Stunting with Chris and Lacey
  • Home-made soup with Kenny and Mari
  • Delivering mom’s delicious sugar cookies to neighbors
  • Boardgames! Especially Clue
  • Dad’s slideshow

Mom and dad Tanner: Thanks so much for having us and making Christmas wonderful!

Mom and dad McConnon: We really missed you and can’t wait to be with you for Christmas 2009!

Boston Marathon Update

Exciting!

Oh, and I can’t believe I forgot to post this picture from the St. George marathon we ran in October…look at the bloody nipples on #789:

I’m still without words.

Falling Gas Prices Cont’d

OPEC announced that it’s cutting production…how much longer will these prices last?

Falling Gas Prices

I’ve been so excited about the falling gas prices that I’ve documented my last few visits to the pump. Each time I go, I find myself thinking “this could conceivably be the cheapest gas I’ll ever buy in my lifetime.” I’ve been wrong now quite a few times and couldn’t be happier about it. How far will it drop?

BYU Homecoming Weekend ’08

Homecoming was a blast this year…I’ll let some pictures do the talking.

On Friday night we went to a BYU cheer alumni dinner and connected with some good friends we hadn’t seen in a while. Here’s a great shot of April, Sandy, Kristie, Heather and David “Grant” Grant:

The next morning was the homecoming parade. Since Kristie had to be there with her squad, I decided to come along too, and we rode the entire thing on top of the Cosmobile along with a raucous party of Cougar United friends.

After the parade we headed off to Lavell Edwards Stadium where the Cougars were facing off with the UNM Lobos. As part of homecoming weekend, they had the Cheer alumni come out on the field at halftime and perform. I ran into a couple of the old-school Cosmo mascots who did a bang-up job dressing for the occasion and maintaining their secret identities:

And here are a few pictures from the half-time event:

Kristie looked awesome up there. If it weren’t for her herniated disc, she wouldn’t have anything to do with this alumni business for at least another year. She’s grateful for all that she got to do in three years, but it’s  tough because the injury happened right when she was at the top of her game. It takes some crazy athleticism to stunt like she does.

BYU won the game in a hard fought battle. Still undefeated…but they’ve got to start stepping it up if they want to finish 12-0. Go Cougars!

Home To Idaho

This week I dropped Kristie off at the airport on Tuesday afternoon so that she could spend some time helping out around the house while her mom, Sherri, recovered from a masectomy. Her breast cancer diagnosis is scary for all of us, but we all feel so blessed by the fact that the cancer doesn’t appear to have spread beyond the mammary tissue of one breast and a primary lymph node.

Sherri has been so positive and strong during this whole process, it’s amazing to me that she ends up bouying up those around her, even if it should be the other way around. Soon she’ll be meeting with doctors to discuss treatment and ways to eradicate cancer that could have slipped by detection.

Mom, you’re in our prayers, know that we love you.

Kristie’s New Job – Part II

Kristie is taking a temporary break from personal training until April ’09 when she graduates because she was offered (and accepted) an assistant coach position for the BYU cheer squad. She’ll be great at it, as she is with everything she sets her mind to.

The job certainly has its perks, which makes the transition a little easier. Kristie really struggled with having to give up her clients…they were doing so well and making terrific progress.

Things to love about this job:

  • Instead of having to get up at 5:40 every day for training sessions, Kristie only has to get up at 6:15 twice a week for practice.
  • (Which also means we won’t have to mimic the sleep patterns of your typical great-great-grandmother.)
  • Its within walking distance from our apartment, so Tom can drive the Ford Escort (at an impressive 33 mpg!) instead of driving the Toyota Landcruiser, which might single-handedly be responsible for Earth’s global warming epidemic.
  • Free stuff.
  • Oh, and the opportunity to share wisdom and experience, teach and shape the character of the wonderful girls, etc, etc.

Orem Owlz

Kristie and I decided to pick up a couple of $4 lawn seats to watch our local minor league baseball team, the Orem Owlz duke it out with the something-or-other Voyagers. It was really fun and made me nostalgic for the “America’s Favorite Pastime” that I feel like I never knew.

I gotta hand it to these organizations, there isn’t a thing they won’t do to entertain fans and lure new ones. Tonight, for example, they let fans down onto the field after the game and projected a movie for all to watch. Besides the fact that they picked the laughable “National Treasure 2,” it was a blast.

We got 9 innings, plus two hours of solid entertainement…for $4 each!

Well–until you factor in parking ($2…seriously?), hotdogs (c’mon it’s a ballgame!), drinks (half price with stolen bases), dessert (who can resist Dippin’ Dots?) and kettle corn for the film (think: theatre prices).

Ah well, I’m proud to support the local club.
